A pool barrier is not just a fence near a pool. It is a continuous enclosure with a set minimum height, no gaps a child can get through, no footholds to climb, and a gate that shuts and latches itself every time. The barrier is only as good as its weakest metre.

Safety Standard
What We Build Your Pool Barrier To
Pool barriers in Australia are governed by a safety standard, and the rules exist because young children drown quickly and quietly. Here is what we build to on every pool fence, so you can see the thinking behind the fence rather than just the price.
- Barriers are built to the 1200mm minimum height set by the Australian pool-barrier standard, measured from the finished ground level on the outside of the fence.
- Barrier faces are built without climbable footholds, so horizontal rails, fixings and bracing are positioned or hidden so a child cannot use them as a step.
- Gates are hung on self-closing hinges and fitted with a latch that engages on its own, so the gate closes and latches from any open position without anyone touching it.
- Gates are hung to swing outwards, away from the pool, so a child pushing on the gate closes it rather than opens it.
- Gate latches are fitted at the height the standard requires, which is generally well above a young child's reach unless a shielded latch is used instead.
- We keep the non-climbable zone around the barrier clear in the set-out, and we will point out anything nearby, such as a retaining wall, tap, aircon unit, pot or tree, that could give a child a leg up over the fence.
Pool-barrier rules are enforced by your local council, the City of Launceston, and requirements can differ for existing pools and unusual sites. Choosing Your Pool Fence
Four ways to build the same barrier. The right one usually comes down to the view you want, where the run sits and what you want to spend.
Frameless glassMost popular
Toughened glass panels on stainless spigots, no posts and no top rail, so nothing interrupts the view of the pool. It is the most expensive option and the one that makes the biggest difference to how a yard feels.
Semi-frameless glass
Toughened glass held between slim aluminium posts, which does most of what frameless does for less money. You get a post every panel instead of a clean run, and the posts also take some of the load off the glass.
Flat-top aluminium
Powder-coated aluminium panels with vertical infills and a flat top rail, in a colour to match the house or the roof. It is the budget option, it handles knocks well, and it suits long runs or sections nobody is looking at.
Gates and hardware
Matching glass or aluminium gates on self-closing hinges with a self-latching mechanism, plus the option of a wider gate for mower and equipment access. Hardware is where a pool barrier fails first, so we spec it properly rather than cheaply.

What Affects the Price of a Pool Fence
We quote pool fencing on site, because the same length of barrier can price very differently depending on what it is fixed to and how many gates it needs. These are the things that move the number, so you can see what you are paying for.
Total length of the barrier
The whole enclosure is priced, not just the run along the pool. Corners, returns and short awkward sections cost more per metre than one long clean run.
Material choice
Frameless glass sits at the top, semi-frameless in the middle and flat-top aluminium at the bottom. Plenty of jobs mix them, with glass across the view and aluminium down the side.
Ground and fixing surface
Fixing into an existing concrete slab or paving is quicker than digging footings into clay or rock. If there is no slab, we have to form and pour before anything gets stood up.
Spigot or channel fixing
Glass can be held by individual spigots or set into a continuous channel, and channel work costs more to set out and install. It also changes how the base of the barrier looks from the pool side.
Gates and hardware
Every gate adds hardware, a hinge set, a latch and extra set-out time. A second gate for mower or equipment access is a separate line on the quote.
Removing the old barrier
Pulling out an old pool fence, breaking out footings and taking the rubbish away is itemised separately. You can leave it off the quote and handle it yourself if you would rather.

Yes. A pool gate is required to be self-closing and self-latching, so it shuts and latches on its own from any open position without anyone pushing it, and it should swing away from the pool. We fit and adjust the hardware to do exactly that, and we show you how to check it stays that way.
Sometimes. An existing fence can only be part of a barrier if it meets the height, gap and non-climbable requirements along its whole length, and plenty of older fences do not. We will look at it during the measure and tell you what we think, then point you to the council or a building surveyor to confirm it.
It is possible on some blocks, but a boundary fence has to meet the same requirements as any other part of the barrier, including what sits on the neighbour's side that could be climbed. Because there is another property involved, this is one to confirm with the City of Launceston before you rely on it.
Not us. Assessment and sign-off is handled by your council or a building surveyor, and requirements can differ for new pools versus existing ones. We install to the Australian pool-barrier standard and give you a barrier built to pass, then the inspection is between you and the council.
Yes. On a slope we step the barrier so the height is right along the whole run and there are no gaps under the panels, and on paving or an existing slab we core or surface fix rather than dig. Levels change what counts as the ground on the outside of the fence, so sloping sites get set out carefully.
Most residential pool barriers go in within a day or two once the glass or panels arrive, depending on the length and the fixing method. If footings have to be poured first, we allow curing time before anything is stood up.
