Mowbray sits inside the City of Launceston, so that is the council you deal with. A shared boundary fence also brings your neighbour into it, and around here that is often a neighbour with an old fence of their own.
Under the Boundary Fences Act 1908 (Tas), a dividing fence between two properties is generally a cost shared by both owners. The Act sets out how notice is given and how the share is worked out.
You get the quote in writing, which is what you need before the conversation with the neighbour about splitting it. A real number is far easier to agree on than a rough figure over the fence.
Most standard boundary fences do not need a council permit. Height, retaining, and a fence on a boundary with a road are the usual exceptions. Pool barriers sit under the Tasmanian building rules and are handled separately.

Mowbray is in the City of Launceston. Most standard boundary fences do not need a permit, and if yours looks like one of the exceptions we will tell you at the quote rather than after.
Timber is usually the lighter spend up front and can be repaired board by board. Colorbond asks for more at the start, will not rot at the base and wants almost nothing from you later. On an exposed Heights boundary we lean Colorbond, and on a sheltered flat block either is a fair call.
Usually yes. We look at what the old wall is actually holding and whether it can carry posts, then work out whether the new fence sits on it or beside it. If the retaining itself is failing we will say so rather than build over the top of it.
